Anabiosis: Medieval and Traditional Music of Cyprus

Situated between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western world, Cyprus has been shaped over centuries by diverse musical and cultural influences, converging ancient rituals, with Byzantine and medieval traditions. These elements coexist as traces within the island’s soundscape, forming a continuum in which older practices are preserved, transformed, and recontextualized across time. Anabiosis (“revival” in Cypriot Greek) reflects this enduring continuity and highlights the island’s rich and beautiful musical heritage.

Φύση, Λατρεία και Θείο (Nature, Worship and the Divine)

As part of the Festival of Sacred Music, the European medieval music ensemble Sibil•la Ensemble collaborates with distinguished composers and musicians from Greece and Cyprus. With a strong emphasis on the Divine, human passion, and the need for transcendence, a musical ritual emerges—uniting medieval and contemporary music on historical instruments. The performance draws inspiration from the relationship between Nature and the Divine, as reflected in medieval musical traditions of both the West and the East.

Works by Yannis Kyriakides, Angelos Mastrantonis, and Yiannis Panayiotou have been commissioned by the ensemble in collaboration with the Greek National Opera, while Aspasia Nasopoulou’s work has been specially adapted for the group.
